Millcreek is an incorporated city just south of Salt Lake City's Sugar House neighborhood, and it functions as an extension of that market. U of U students and graduate students who get priced out of the Avenues often end up here — rents run a bit lower for similar unit quality, and TRAX access is decent. The city has a quieter, more residential character than Sugar House, with fewer bars and more single-family homes mixed in among the apartment stock. Access to the Millcreek Canyon trails for hiking and biking is a genuine draw for outdoor-oriented students. It is a practical choice for students who want Salt Lake proximity without paying Salt Lake prices.
The stretch along 2100 South and 2300 South bordering Sugar House is the most student-dense part of Millcreek — apartments, coffee shops, and the S-Line streetcar within range. Slightly more affordable than Sugar House proper.
Further from the transit lines but closer to the canyon and more affordable. Better for students with a car who want more space. Less walkable but very bikeable along the canyon road.
Here's what you need to know about getting around Millcreek.
The S-Line streetcar runs along the northern edge of Millcreek into Sugar House and connects to TRAX. Bus routes fill in the rest of the city with moderate frequency. Access to downtown and the U of U is reasonable with a transfer, though not as direct as Sugar House.
Northern Millcreek near Sugar House is walkable — the streets are grid-based and connected to Sugar House's commercial areas. Moving east, the city gets more residential and spread out. The Millcreek Canyon trail system is excellent for biking, though it is recreational rather than commute infrastructure.
Parking is generally not a problem. Most apartments include a space, and street parking in residential areas is unrestricted. The proximity to Sugar House does not bring the same parking competition you find in denser neighborhoods.
Common questions from students searching for housing.
