University of Missouri-Kansas City is an urban research university enrolling roughly 13,000 to 16,000 students on a midtown campus in the Volker neighborhood, steps from the Country Club Plaza. Freshman Live-On Requirement
UMKC does not enforce a universal freshman live-on requirement, so all incoming students are free to choose between on-campus and off-campus housing from their first semester. That said, living on campus is strongly encouraged for first-year students because it supports academic adjustment and campus engagement.
Off-Campus Eligibility
All students at UMKC are eligible to live off campus regardless of class standing or credit hours. Because on-campus capacity is limited relative to total enrollment, the majority of students at every level rent apartments or houses in surrounding Kansas City neighborhoods.
Lease Timing
Most off-campus leases in the Kansas City market follow a standard 12-month calendar tied to August move-in dates. Students should begin their search in November or December to secure the best units before spring competition increases.
