Do Texas State Apartments Cover the Bobcat Shuttle? What San Marcos Student Leases Actually Include

No. The Bobcat Shuttle isn't a line item in the rent at your San Marcos apartment. Texas State funds it through a $95-per-semester Bus Fee on the tuition bill, and that fee is what runs the buses. So when a complex calls itself "on the shuttle," it's telling you where the nearest stop is.

It isn't telling you about a service your lease covers.

Key Takeaways

  • $95 a semester. That's the Bus Fee Texas State lists on your tuition bill for shuttle operations, and you pay it whether you ride or not.
  • Riding costs nothing extra: the Bobcat Shuttle FAQ says you don't show an ID or pay a fare.
  • Eight off-campus routes (20 through 28) cover corridors like Post Road, Mill Street, Aquarena Springs Drive and Wonder World Drive.
  • Check the clock. Daytime off-campus buses stop at 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 5:30 p.m. on Friday, with no Sunday service.
  • Routes 24 (Craddock) and 28 (Holland) don't run in summer, which matters if you signed a 12-month lease and take summer classes.
  • None of the FMP San Marcos listings we checked name the shuttle as an amenity, so you'll need to confirm the stop yourself.

Who Pays for the Bobcat Shuttle at Texas State?

Students do, through tuition. Texas State's Student Business Services office defines the Bus Fee as $95 per semester, used to "operate shuttle buses" (see the official tuition and fee definitions). The shuttle's own About page says the same thing in plainer words: students support it by paying a bus fee when they register.

That has one practical consequence. A building on a shuttle route isn't giving you anything you haven't already paid for. Two complexes a mile apart can both advertise "shuttle access," and the only real difference is how far you walk to the stop and how often a bus shows up there. That's the real comparison to make when you shop Texas State off campus housing.

Full disclosure, we went looking for an official source saying San Marcos complexes pay the university to get a stop. We didn't find one on any Texas State page we checked. So we won't claim it either way, and you shouldn't let a leasing agent imply that "shuttle included" means your rent buys something extra.

Which San Marcos Apartments Sit on a Bobcat Shuttle Route?

Several FMP-listed buildings sit right on off-campus route corridors, and a few share their names with stops on Texas State's published route pages. Here's how the San Marcos buildings on Find My Place line up with the Bobcat Shuttle route maps and schedules as of fall 2026.

Route 23, Post Road

This is the cleanest match in town. Route 23's stop list includes "The Outpost" and "Elevation" by name. The Outpost San Marcos (1647 Post Road, about 2.0 miles from campus) lists from $595, and Elevation on Post just up the road at 1629 Post Road lists from $629. Morning buses on this route run roughly every 6 to 12 minutes.

Route 22, Mill Street

Route 22 has a stop called "Telluride," and The Village on Telluride sits at 201 Telluride St., about 2.2 miles out, listing from $789. The Thompson is at 1655 Mill Street on the same corridor and lists from $619 (it also holds a 4.0 FMP score from five student reviews). Walk the block from your door to the nearest Route 22 stop before you sign. Stop names don't always sit where the leasing office is.

Route 20, Aquarena Springs

Route 20 includes a stop named "The Lodge Apartments." Lodge in San Marcos is at 1975 Aquarena Springs Dr., about 2.4 miles from campus, and lists from $635. The name match is strong, though we'd still pull up the live tracker to confirm the stop sits at that entrance.

Route 26, Wonder World

One of Route 26's five stops is "Leah Ave." Leah Avenue Student Townhomes at 1441 Leah Avenue lists at $499, the lowest starting price in the FMP San Marcos set right now. It's 2.8 miles out, and Route 26 is one of the slower lines, with morning buses about every 11 to 12 minutes and gaps up to 30 minutes midday.

What "On the Shuttle" Doesn't Tell You

A route on the map is not the same as a bus when you need it. Three details in Texas State's schedule catch car-free students every year.

The daytime off-campus routes run 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday. After that, evening routes (like Route 42 for Mill and Post, or Route 40 for Aquarena and Blanco River) take over until 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday only. There's a Saturday schedule from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. There's nothing on Sunday or on designated university holidays.

Summer is thinner. The shuttle runs Monday through Friday until 5:30 p.m., evening routes stop entirely, and Routes 24 and 28 go dark. If your lease runs August to July and you're taking a summer session, that gap is yours to solve.

Frequency also drops fast after the morning rush. Route 25 on Ranch Road runs about every 7 to 11 minutes early, then stretches to 20 or 30-plus minutes by late afternoon. A 3:30 lab can mean a real wait.

San Marcos Apartments Where the Shuttle Barely Matters

Some students skip the question by living close enough to walk. Campus Trailhead Apartments at 222 Ramsay St. is 0.6 miles from campus and lists from $699. The View on the Square, at 228 S Guadalupe St. off the downtown square, is 0.7 miles out and lists from $659. Campus sits on a hill, so "walkable" still means a climb.

At the other end, The Lodges at Parker's Pond on S Old Bastrop Hwy is about 6 miles out. None of the eight off-campus route names reference that corridor. If you don't have a car, that address probably isn't for you.

Five Questions to Ask Before You Sign a San Marcos Lease

  • Which stop, exactly? Get the stop name from Texas State's route page, then match it to your building.
  • How far is the walk from your unit (not the clubhouse) to that stop?
  • What does the route's afternoon schedule look like for the times your classes end?
  • Does the route run in summer, if your lease does?
  • Is there a separate transportation, amenity or "convenience" fee in the lease? The shuttle itself is already covered by your Bus Fee, so ask what that lease fee pays for. Our guide to hidden fees in student apartment leases covers the usual suspects.

Prices on FMP are base rent, and several San Marcos listings haven't posted their monthly fees yet. Treat every "from" price as a floor. You can compare every building in town on the San Marcos student housing page.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Bobcat Shuttle and San Marcos Apartments

Is the Bobcat Shuttle free for Texas State students?

$95 a semester, paid up front. There's no fare at the door and no ID check, but the $95 Bus Fee sits on your tuition bill each semester, so it's prepaid rather than free.

Do apartment complexes in San Marcos pay for the Bobcat Shuttle?

Texas State's official pages describe the shuttle as funded by the student Bus Fee. They don't mention apartment payments, and we couldn't verify any. Treat "on the shuttle" in an apartment ad as a location claim, not a feature your rent covers.

Does the Bobcat Shuttle run on weekends?

Saturdays only, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., during the fall and spring. There's no Sunday service, and there's no service on designated university holidays.

Can I bring my bike on the Bobcat Shuttle?

Yes. Each bus has a front rack that holds three bikes, first come, first served, according to the Bobcat Shuttle FAQ.

How do I know whether a bus is coming to my apartment's stop?

Use the ETA Transit live tracker linked from the Bobcat Shuttle site. Outside the three major hubs (LBJ, the Quad and Trauth Huffman Hall), buses stop only on request or when someone is waiting, so stand where the driver can see you.
