Living Car-Free at UIUC: Which Champaign-Urbana Apartments Sit on the Busiest MTD Routes

You can live off campus at UIUC without a car by picking an apartment on one of the MTD routes that runs every 10 minutes: the 22 Illini, 12 Teal, 13 Silver, 10 Gold or 1 Yellow. In September 2026 alone, the 22 Illini carried 276,257 weekday riders.

You can live off campus at UIUC without a car, and plenty of students do. The trick is picking an apartment on one of the MTD routes that runs every 10 minutes: the 22 Illini, 12 Teal, 13 Silver, 10 Gold or 1 Yellow. Every University of Illinois student rides those buses by showing an i-card, so a building a short walk from one of them gets you to class faster than a parking spot would. In September 2026 alone, the 22 Illini carried 276,257 weekday riders, by far the most of any route in Champaign-Urbana.

Below, we matched Find My Place listings near UIUC to their nearest MTD stops using MTD's own schedule data for fall 2026. If you'd rather browse first, start with all off-campus housing near UIUC.

Key Takeaways

  • Five MTD routes run about every 10 minutes on weekdays: 22 Illini, 12 Teal, 13 Silver, 10 Gold and 1 Yellow.
  • The Dean Campustown is the best-connected building we checked, roughly a two-minute walk from the Transit Plaza on Wright Street.
  • Cheapest bus-friendly beds? North Lincoln Avenue in Urbana, where Capstone Quarters lists four-bedrooms from $465 a person on the 22 Illini line.
  • A student parking permit from UIUC is currently listed at $960 a year. The bus costs you $74 a semester in student fees, and you pay that either way.
  • Skip buildings served by a single 30-minute route (we found one in east Urbana that's a 22-minute ride from the Illini Union).

The Busiest MTD Routes for UIUC Students

The 22 Illini is the backbone of car-free life at UIUC. It runs north-south from Lincoln and Killarney in Urbana through Campustown to the PAR residence halls on the south side of campus, every 10 minutes on weekdays from about 6:45 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. After that, the 220 Illini takes over until roughly 2:40 a.m.

MTD's September 2026 route performance report shows how lopsided ridership is:

  • 22 Illini: 276,257 weekday passengers in the month.
  • 12 Teal: 100,624.
  • 13 Silver: 90,444.
  • 220 Illini (evenings): 77,323.
  • 1 Yellow and 10 Gold, counting their Hopper variants: roughly 135,000 and 91,000.

Across fiscal 2026, MTD gave 11.86 million rides, and about 82% of them were University of Illinois students. That's why the buses run this often. It's also why the 22 can get packed at rush hour, so leave a few minutes early for 9 a.m. classes.

How UIUC students pay for the bus

You don't pay per ride. All U of I students ride by showing their i-card, per MTD's fare page, and inside the campus iStop zone you don't even need to show it. The cost is built into the Campus Transit/Safe Rides fee, which the University of Illinois Board of Trustees set at $74 a semester for 2026-27.

Campustown Apartments on the 10-Minute Routes

Campustown is where you can walk to class and still have the best bus access, so car-free living here is easy. These buildings sit within a short walk of a stop with 10-minute service. (Distances are our measurements from the street address to MTD's stop locations, so treat them as approximate.)

  • The Dean Campustown, 708 S Sixth St: about 180 meters from the Transit Plaza, where the 1 Yellow, 12 Teal, 13 Silver and 22 Illini all stop. Four-bedroom plans list from $1,115 a person (studios run $1,800 and up, so the four-bedroom figure is per bed). FMP rating 3.8 across five reviews.
  • The Suites at Third, 302 E John St: about 125 meters from Third and Daniel on the 22 Illini, roughly three minutes to the Transit Plaza. A shared bedroom in a 2x2 lists from $799. Rated 4.2.
  • 1008 S. 4th: right next to the Fourth and Chalmers stop on the 22 Illini, and FMP puts it 0.2 miles from campus. Four-bedroom plans list from $835 a bed, and the listing labels its plans per bedroom.
  • Octave, 210 S Fourth St: on the north edge of Campustown, a short walk from the White Street stop served by the 1 Yellow and 12 Teal. It lists one plan at $899, so ask whether that's per person.

Green Street buildings like HERE Champaign sit on the 5 Green and the new 17 Cherry instead. Those run less often (the Green is about every 15 minutes combined), but HERE is also a walk to most of the Quad.

Urbana Apartments on the 22 Illini Line

North Lincoln Avenue is the cheapest car-free option near UIUC, and the 22 Illini is the reason it works. Every building below sits within about 130 meters of a 22 Illini stop, with a bus every 10 minutes and a 9 to 11 minute ride to the Illini Union.

  • Capstone Quarters, 1901 N Lincoln: four-bedrooms from $465 a person (two-bedrooms are $660, so these are per-bed prices). About 11 minutes to the Illini Union.
  • The Forge on Lincoln, 1321 N Lincoln: four-bedroom plans from $635 a bed. About 9 minutes by bus.
  • The Foundry, 1601 N Lincoln: a 4x4 from $675 and a 3x3 from $785, both per bed. About 10 minutes.
  • The Atrium, 1306 N Lincoln: a four-bedroom plan lists at $445, the lowest starting price we found near UIUC.

Closer in, Campus Circle Urbana at 1010 W University Ave has a 22 Illini stop named after it, about 50 meters from the door and six minutes from the Illini Union. Private rooms in a 4x4 list from $919. For a full side-by-side of neighborhoods and rents, read our Campustown vs Urbana vs Savoy breakdown.

Where Car-Free Living Gets Harder

Car-free gets hard once you're on a single route that runs every 30 minutes. A three-bedroom house at 1109 Austin Dr in east Urbana lists at $1,350 for the whole unit, which looks cheap split three ways. But it's served only by the 5 Green, and the ride to the Illini Union takes about 22 minutes. Miss one bus and you've lost half an hour.

That's what we call the FMP Ten-Minute Rule: before you sign, find the nearest stop and check that a bus leaves it at least every 10 minutes during class hours. If it doesn't, add 15 minutes to every trip in your head and decide whether the rent savings are still worth it.

Late nights without a car

Night service near campus is better than most students expect. The 220 Illini runs until about 2:40 a.m. on weekdays, and the 50 Green covers Green Street in the evening. For areas the buses don't reach, MTD's SafeRides van takes requests until 6 a.m. during the semester. Book through the MTD Connect app or call 217.384.8188. It's included with your fees, though MTD can turn down trips to or from bars.

What a Car Actually Costs at UIUC

Keeping a car near campus costs about $960 a year in parking alone if you buy a university permit. That's the student 12-month rate on the UIUC Parking rates page. A spot in the remote shuttle lot is cheaper at $143, but then you're riding a shuttle anyway. Campus meters run $1.25 an hour, and $2.00 near the Illini Union.

None of the FMP property pages we checked list a parking fee yet, so ask on the tour. Then compare it to what car-free students use instead:

  • Zipcar: $35 a year for students, from $12 an hour, with cars at Bousfield Hall, Illinois Street Residence Halls and Lot D1.
  • Veo e-bikes: about 1,000 dockless bikes around campus, though Veo pulls some of the fleet when winter ridership drops.
  • Illinois Terminal, 45 E University Ave: Amtrak stops six times a day, and Peoria Charter runs shuttles to O'Hare and Midway. Almost every MTD route stops there, per MTD's Illinois Terminal page.

Frequently Asked Questions About Living Car-Free at UIUC

Do you need a car at UIUC?

No. About 82% of MTD's 11.86 million rides in fiscal 2026 were University of Illinois students, and you ride free with an i-card. A car mostly helps if you live past the 10-minute routes or work off campus.

Which bus goes to North Lincoln Avenue apartments?

The 22 Illini. It runs every 10 minutes on weekdays between Lincoln and Killarney and campus, then switches to the 220 Illini at night. Capstone Quarters, The Foundry, The Forge on Lincoln and The Atrium all sit near its stops.

Is it cheaper to live farther out and take the bus?

Usually, yes. North Lincoln Avenue four-bedrooms list from $465 to $675 a person, compared with $1,115 at The Dean in Campustown. Add zero for the bus (it's in your fees) and zero for parking if you skip the car.

How do I check when my bus is coming?

Text the stop's code to 35890, or check the stop page on mtd.org for live departure estimates. Each stop's code is listed on its mtd.org page. Apps like Transit pull the same real-time data.
