UNC Charlotte off-campus housing is only truly "on the Blue Line" at a handful of complexes. Walden Station sits about a quarter mile from the JW Clay Blvd/UNC Charlotte station, Junction 49 is about 0.3 miles from University City Blvd station, and NOVEL University Place is roughly 0.35 miles from JW Clay. Most of the student complexes along University City Boulevard east of campus are 0.7 miles or more from any station, so they work better as walk-or-bus places than light-rail places.
Key Takeaways
- The LYNX Blue Line has four stops that matter to UNC Charlotte renters: University City Blvd, McCullough, JW Clay Blvd/UNC Charlotte, and UNC Charlotte–Main on Cameron Boulevard.
- Your ride is already paid for. Students who pay the transportation fee get the CATS All-Access Pass automatically, and exempt students can buy it for $25 a semester.
- Junction 49 ($749) and Walden Station ($750) have the lowest confirmed per-bed prices of any complex within half a mile of a station.
- "Near the light rail" in a listing often means a mile or more. Measure it yourself.
- First-year students live on campus, so this search usually starts for sophomore year.
Which UNC Charlotte Off-Campus Housing Is Actually on the Blue Line
Five FMP-listed properties are within about half a mile, straight-line, of a Blue Line station. Everything else in University City is a longer walk or a bus ride to the train. All distances below are measured as the crow flies from each building's address to the station platform, so expect the real walk to be a bit longer.
- Walden Station: about 0.26 miles from JW Clay Blvd/UNC Charlotte
- Junction 49: about 0.3 miles from University City Blvd
- NOVEL University Place: about 0.35 miles from JW Clay Blvd/UNC Charlotte
- Campus Walk Condominiums: about 0.4 miles from UNC Charlotte–Main

Walden Station and NOVEL: The JW Clay Station Pair
JW Clay Blvd/UNC Charlotte is the station for renters who want the train and campus in the same trip. It sits at 9048 North Tryon Street with an 800-space parking deck, one stop from UNC Charlotte–Main.
Walden Station at 342 Walden Station Drive is the closest FMP-listed building to that platform. It lists three-bedroom plans at $750, two-bedrooms at $876 and one-bedrooms from $1,208. Price drops as the bedroom count goes up, which only makes sense per bed. The commute widget puts it 1.1 miles from campus, so the train genuinely saves you a walk.
NOVEL University Place at 5315 Waters Edge Village Drive is the other one. It is a conventional apartment building: one-bedrooms list from $1,523, two-bedrooms from $2,008, and a three-bedroom at $2,932. Rent climbs with size here, so those are whole-unit prices. Split a two-bedroom and you are near $1,000 each, before fees.
Junction 49 and Arcadia: The University City Blvd Station Side
University City Blvd station, at 7205 North Tryon Street, has the biggest park-and-ride on this stretch with 1,513 spaces. Two student complexes sit within walking distance of it.
- Junction 49 at 7521 Twitter Lane is about 0.3 miles from the station. Five-bedroom private rooms list from $749, four-bedrooms from $799 and one-bedrooms around $1,950, so this is per-bed pricing.
- Arcadia Student Living at 707 Sanctuary Place is about 0.43 miles away. Its five-bedroom plans start at $800 and one-bedrooms at $1,670, again per bed.
The catch is that both are 1.8 to 1.9 miles from campus. Without the train you are driving or biking every day. With it, you are three stops from UNC Charlotte–Main.
The University City Boulevard Strip: Close to Campus, Not to the Train
The big cluster of student complexes east of campus along University City Boulevard and NC 49 is closer to class, but not to a station. That is fine. It just means the light rail is for weekends, not for your 9 a.m.
The Drake at 9905 University City Boulevard is a good example. It is 0.8 miles from campus and about 0.88 miles straight-line from UNC Charlotte–Main station. Four-bedroom plans list from $815 per bed and one-bedrooms from $1,275.
One exception sits right by campus: Campus Walk Condominiums on Campus Walk Lane is 0.6 miles from class and about 0.4 miles from UNC Charlotte–Main. It lists a three-bedroom, two-bath condo at $650 a month; ask whether that is per room or for the whole unit.
Students on the strip usually walk, bike or ride Niner Transit onto campus. If you want NoDa or Uptown on a Friday night, you head to UNC Charlotte–Main and catch the train from there.
How Much the Blue Line Is Worth to Your Budget
The CATS All-Access Pass covers unlimited rides on CATS buses, the streetcar, the airport Sprinter and the LYNX Blue Line. Students who pay the university's transportation service charge get it at no extra cost through the CATS-Pass app, logged in with a charlotte.edu email. Students exempted from that fee can buy a semester pass for $25.
So the real savings is parking and gas. A station-adjacent place like Walden Station or Junction 49 can let you skip a campus parking permit entirely. Keep the pass on your phone, though. Fare inspectors on the light rail can cite you if you cannot show it.
Before you sign anywhere, read the fee sheet too. Our guide to hidden fees in student apartment leases covers the add-ons that push rent above the listed number.

Find My Place — By Students, For Students
Colton Hibbert is the founder and CEO of Find My Place. He started it after getting burned by the usual student housing routine: hidden fees, staged photos, and a leasing office that stopped answering the second the lease was signed. So he built the platform he wished he'd had. Today he sets the strategy and keeps the whole company pointed at one job, making off-campus housing something students can actually trust. He writes here about where the student housing market is headed and why FMP is built the way it is.
