How Blacksburg Transit Shapes Where Virginia Tech Students Live

Blacksburg Transit decides how far out you can live without a car, and it's generous. BT is fare-free for every rider. During the semester, most routes run every 10 to 15 minutes between 7 AM and 7 PM, according to Blacksburg Transit's service hours page. Buses run until 12:45 AM Monday through Thursday and until 2:45 AM on Friday and Saturday.

That's why the search for vt off campus housing spreads so far past downtown. A complex two miles out on a 15-minute route works fine for 9 AM classes. The catch is what nobody puts in the listing: some routes quit at lunchtime, and others run half as often on weekends.

Walkable to Campus: Webb Street, Lunch Pail Lane and East Roanoke Street

Six FMP listings are within about a 17-minute walk of Burruss Hall. Four sit in one small pocket north of campus, in Snidow Heights between Toms Creek Road and North Main Street.

The Edge Apartments & Townhomes on Edge Way is the closest, at roughly 11 minutes (0.6 miles). It lists from $1,190, and because rent drops as bedrooms go up ($1,320 for a 2x2, $1,190 for a 4x4), that's a per-bed price. Tech Terrace on Webb Street is about 13 minutes out. Its 4-bedroom listing shows $3,196 for the unit, or $799 a person. That's the steal of this pocket.

A couple of blocks over on Lunch Pail Lane, Haven Blacksburg and Old Row on North Main are each about a 15-minute walk. Haven lists from $650 (an individual lease in a 4-bedroom), and Old Row lists at $1,195.

East Roanoke Street, southeast of downtown

Chase Apartments (421-461 Roanoke St E) and East Roanoke Street (442 Roanoke St E) are both about 17 minutes from Burruss, a mile on foot through downtown. Chase lists a 4-bedroom at $3,274 for the unit, or $819 a person. East Roanoke Street lists a 3-bedroom from $700. Rather ride? The HDG runs along Roanoke Street every 20 minutes on weekdays until 5:40 PM, then every 30.

Toms Creek Road and University City Boulevard: The Most Frequent Bus Corridor

The Toms Creek Road, Patrick Henry Drive and University City Boulevard corridor has more FMP listings than anywhere else in Blacksburg, and more buses. Nine places sit here, 21 to 31 minutes from Burruss on foot.

On a fall weekday, TCR and PRG each run every 12 minutes until about 12:30 PM. After that, TCP takes over every 10 minutes. UCB runs every 15 minutes all day and PHB every 12. TCP keeps going until 12:30 AM Monday through Thursday and 2:30 AM on Friday and Saturday. Honestly, you'll barely look at a schedule.

Read that price column carefully. Union, Fourteen35 and Collegiate Suites get cheaper as bedrooms go up, which only works if you pay by the bed. Chasewood and Shawnee climb with bedrooms, so that's whole-apartment rent (split a Chasewood 2x2 and you could beat a Union bed). Terrace View's 36 floor plans jump around too much to call, and Stonegate, Alight and Park37 don't show enough to tell.

North Main Street, Uptown and Givens Lane

The north end of North Main Street is the cheap seats, and you'll ride the NMG everywhere. 1711 Apartments on Whipple Drive lists 4-bedroom units from $485, the lowest starting price on FMP in Blacksburg. Maple Ridge Townhomes on Red Maple Drive starts at $965 a person, and The Summit at Uptown (1820 N Main St) at $941. Clover Valley Phase II, a bit closer in, lists at $950.

Walking is off the table: 1711, Maple Ridge and The Summit are 41 to 45 minutes from Burruss. NMG covers North Main, Givens Lane and Whipple Drive every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 on weekends.

Prices Fork Road, Hethwood and Foxridge

West of campus, the Prices Fork side is Hethwood and Foxridge territory, and the bus plan changes at lunch. Brexx at Blacksburg (1800 Redd Rd) is the FMP listing out here. It's about 36 minutes on foot and lists from $1,049 a person.

The CRB bus serves Carpenter Boulevard and Redd Circle directly, every 20 minutes, from 7:35 AM to 12:35 PM on weekdays. After that, BT's fall 2026 service update tells riders to switch to HWA, HWB or HWC. The same update extended HWA and HWB, which serve the Hethwood, Tall Oaks Drive and Foxridge area every 15 minutes, to 6:30 PM. After that and on weekends, HWC takes over.

South Main Street

The Mill at Blacksburg on Grayland Street lists from $550 but sits about 50 minutes (2.4 miles) out on foot. SMS and SME stop at Marlington and Grayland every 30 minutes, the thinnest service of any FMP listing in town.
