About Off-Campus Housing Near Indiana University of Pennsylvania
Indiana University of Pennsylvania is a public university and member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, located in the borough of Indiana in western Pennsylvania. Despite its name, IUP has no connection to Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Founded in 1875 as Indiana State Normal School, IUP now enrolls approximately 8,000 students across undergraduate and graduate programs, with particular strengths in education, criminology, business, and the culinary arts. The borough of Indiana is a small community of roughly 14,000 residents in Indiana County, set among the rolling Allegheny foothills about 55 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The campus occupies a central position in the borough, making it easy for students to walk between classes, off-campus housing, and the commercial district along Philadelphia Street.

Freshman Live-On Requirement
IUP requires all first-year students to live in university residence halls during their first academic year unless they qualify for an exemption. Approved exemptions include students who are 21 or older, married, veterans, or commuting from a parent or guardian's home within a defined local distance.
Off-Campus Eligibility
Students who have completed their freshman year at IUP are free to seek off-campus housing without restriction. Because Indiana, PA is a small borough with a rental market tightly centered on the university, most students have no difficulty finding affordable options within walking distance of campus.
Lease Timing
The rental market in Indiana, PA operates on a compressed academic schedule. Students who want units in the blocks immediately surrounding campus should begin searching in November or December and plan to sign leases by February. Properties further from campus remain available later into the spring, but the best-located units go quickly.
