About Off-Campus Housing Near University of Maryland, Baltimore
The University of Maryland, Baltimore is the state's public health, law and human services university, located on a downtown campus just west of the Inner Harbor with about 7,100 students. UMB is composed almost entirely of graduate and professional schools, including the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the Francis King Carey School of Law, and schools of dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, social work and graduate studies. Because the student body is professional and graduate rather than undergraduate, housing works differently here than at a traditional university, and as of 2025 UMB has transitioned out of operating student housing altogether. That makes the surrounding downtown Baltimore rental market the only option, which is workable: Baltimore rents are among the most attainable of any major East Coast city. Find My Place currently lists 129 rentals in Baltimore, with monthly rents from about $1,166 to $1,830 and a median near $1,299.
University of Maryland, Baltimore Housing Requirements
No University-Operated Housing
UMB has exited direct housing operations. The university sold Fayette Square, with ownership formally transitioning to Zahlco Management on February 28, 2025, and Pascault Row ceased operations on August 31, 2025. IPEDS still reports a dorm capacity figure for UMB that predates this change, so students should disregard it. There is no residency requirement and no university housing application.
Off-Campus Eligibility
All students rent privately from their first term. Fayette Square continues to operate as private housing under new ownership and remains an option, but students apply to it as they would any private apartment building rather than through the university. Graduate and professional students commonly share apartments or rowhouses in the neighborhoods around the downtown campus.
Lease Timing
Baltimore leases typically run twelve months, and the market has a summer peak tied to the arrival of professional-school cohorts in July and August.
