You can live off campus at JMU without a car if you pick a complex on one of the fare-free JMU bus lines. For fall 2026, the city's route list puts The Harrison, The Fox Townhomes, Squire Hill and both Hills complexes on the Green Line, Arcadia on the Pink Line, Sunchase on the Purple Line, Redpoint and Copper Beech on the Blue Line, and The Mill on the Yellow Line. The catch is the clock: most JMU lines run weekdays only, roughly 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Key Takeaways

  • Every JMU line is fare-free right now, and the city says it's running fare-free service "until further notice."
  • The Green Line is the workhorse for Devon Lane and Port Republic Road (The Harrison, The Fox, Squire Hill, Northview, Southview).
  • After 7 p.m. you switch to the Gold or Silver Line, which also run Saturdays from about 10:20 a.m.
  • Sundays? Only the Shopper runs, 1 to 10 p.m., to Valley Mall, Target and Walmart.
  • A few complexes listed on Find My Place, including The Altitude and North 38, don't show up by name on the fall 2026 JMU line list. Ask before you sign.

How JMU Off-Campus Bus Routes Work in 2026

JMU contracts with the city for bus lines built around student apartments, and riding is free. The service is run by Harrisonburg's Department of Public Transportation, now branded HB Connect. Its fall 2026 schedule runs from August 17, 2026, through January 17, 2027, and lists every JMU line as fare-free.

There are two kinds of routes. The color-coded JMU lines (Black, Blue, Green, Pink, Purple and Yellow) connect specific complexes to campus stops like Festival, the Quad and Godwin Transit Center. The numbered city routes (1 through 6) cover town and run less often, usually hourly. If you're comparing places, start with the color lines and use our page for James Madison off-campus housing to see what each complex costs.

Which Harrisonburg Complexes Are on Each JMU Bus Line

Here's how the fall 2026 schedule matches up with complexes listed on Find My Place. Prices are the current "lists from" figure on each listing.

Green Line: Devon Lane and Port Republic Road

The Green Line stops at The Harrison, The Fox Townhomes, Squire Hill, Hunters Ridge and both Hills of Northview and Southview, then hits Godwin Transit Center, the Quad, Showker Hall and the Student Success Center. It runs weekdays from 7 a.m. to about 7:10 p.m. JMU's DukesRide guide says Green Line buses come by Devon Lane every 15 minutes.

This corridor also has some of the lowest rents in town. The Harrison lists from $505, The Hills Northview from $560, The Fox Townhomes from $639 and Squire Hill from $699. Several of these also sit on the Black Line, which runs to Festival, the Convocation Center and UREC.

Pink Line: Arcadia and The Harrison

The Pink Line is short and fast. It links Arcadia Harrisonburg and The Harrison to Festival, weekdays 7 a.m. to 6:44 p.m. DukesRide clocks Arcadia at 8 minutes to the Convocation Center and UREC, with buses every 15 minutes. Arcadia lists rooms from $685.

Purple Line: Sunchase

Sunchase at James Madison gets its own line, a loop to Festival and the Atlantic Union Bank Center. It's about a 7-minute ride, according to DukesRide. Sunchase lists from $740.

Blue Line: Reservoir Street

The Blue Line covers the Reservoir Street side: Copper Beech, Campus View, Charleston Townes, The Pointe and Redpoint Harrisonburg, which lists from $909. Buses run to Festival and East Campus Dining Hall. Frequency is the weak spot here; DukesRide lists the Reservoir Street run as every 40 minutes.

Yellow Line: Downtown and Main Street

The Yellow Line is the night owl of the group. It serves The Mill Apartments (from $509) and Pheasant Run, runs weekdays from 7 a.m. to 10:49 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m., and stops at Godwin Transit Center, Madison Union, the Quad and King Hall. DukesRide also puts Grand Duke Apartments (from $425) on the Yellow Line, about 8 minutes from Godwin.

JMU Bus Service at Night and on Weekends

Most daytime JMU lines stop around 7 p.m. on weekdays and skip weekends entirely. Two evening lines pick up the slack. The Silver Line covers Devon Lane, the Hills complexes, The Cottages and Arcadia, and the Gold Line covers Sunchase, Redpoint, Copper Beech and the Reservoir Street complexes. Both run weeknights from 7 p.m. to about 10:50 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:20 a.m.

Sunday is the real gap. The only JMU line running is the Shopper (1 p.m. to about 10:15 p.m.), which loops from campus to Valley Mall, Target and Walmart. Great for groceries. No help at all getting from your apartment to campus. And all JMU lines follow the academic calendar, so plan on reduced or no service over breaks.

JMU Complexes That Aren't on the Fall 2026 Line List

We checked every Harrisonburg complex on Find My Place against the city's fall 2026 JMU line list and JMU's DukesRide guide. Five didn't appear by name: The Altitude on Port Republic Road, North 38, Glenside Townhomes, The Mark Townhomes and Ice House downtown.

That doesn't mean they're stranded. Ice House sits downtown on South Liberty Street, close enough to walk, and others may be near a stop on a numbered city route. JMU says every off-campus complex is served by at least one direct route, so ask the leasing office which stop and line their residents actually use, and how long the walk is, before you sign.

Which JMU Off-Campus Area Is Best Without a Car?

Devon Lane, without much debate. You get some of the lowest rents in Harrisonburg, Green Line buses every 15 minutes, a second daytime line (Pink or Black, depending on the complex), and Silver Line service at night and on Saturdays. Downtown on the Yellow Line comes second, mostly because it runs latest. For more on the tradeoffs, read our guide to the best Harrisonburg neighborhoods for JMU students.

Find My Place — By Students, For Students
