Living Car-Free at Purdue: Which West Lafayette Apartments Sit on the CityBus Routes

Living off campus at Purdue without a car works best in three places: the walkable blocks of Chauncey Village and New Chauncey, the few buildings on a free Purdue Campus Transit loop, and the apartment complexes with their own CityBus express route.

Purdue University-Main Campus

Living off campus at Purdue without a car works best in three places: the walkable blocks of Chauncey Village and New Chauncey, the few buildings that sit on a free Purdue Campus Transit loop, and the apartment complexes with their own CityBus express route. Village West, The Cottages on Lindberg and Station 21 share the 53E Lindberg Express, which runs every 12 minutes on weekday mornings. Everywhere else, you're paying for a CityBus pass or riding a bike.

Key Takeaways

  • Walking is still the cheapest commute. Collegiate Communities in New Chauncey is 0.3 miles from campus, and rooms there list from $599.
  • Three CityBus express routes (51E, 52E and 53E) run straight from specific complexes to the Physics Building and Purdue Memorial Union.
  • Express routes don't take regular unlimited passes. You ride with an authorized resident ID or pay the express fare.
  • For 2026-27, Purdue says students who buy a CityBus pass cover the entire cost (the semester pass went to $155 in January).
  • Weekends are the gap: Purdue Campus Transit and the express buses run weekdays only.

Car-Free Purdue Off-Campus Housing: The Walkable Blocks

If you can live within about half a mile of the Purdue Memorial Union, you don't need a bus at all. That means Chauncey Village, New Chauncey and South Chauncey, the grid of streets just north and east of campus.

New Chauncey is the budget pick. Collegiate Communities runs houses on Marsteller, North Street, Garfield and Allen, 0.3 miles out, with rooms listed from $599. Closer to State Street you're in tower territory: Chauncey Square is 0.5 miles away and lists from $1,064, and VERVE West Lafayette on Chauncey Avenue is 0.6 miles out from $1,439. You can compare every option on our page for off-campus housing near Purdue.

One honest note. Walking a half mile in a West Lafayette January is a different sport than walking it in September. Budget for real boots.

Apartments on the Free Purdue Campus Transit Loops

Purdue Campus Transit is free for students, but it mostly stays on campus. It runs three loops (Ross-Ade, Purdue Mall and Discovery Park) Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., according to Purdue's Campus Transit page.

The Ross-Ade Loop is the one that touches student apartments. It stops at Tower Drive and Hilltop Drive, right by Crosswalk Commons at 925 Hilltop Dr, where a one-bedroom lists at $1,400. The ride is convenient. The reviews aren't (it holds a 1.9 FMP score, with two 1.0 reviews from June 2026), so tour before you sign.

The Discovery Park Loop stops at Airport Road and District Boulevard, which helps if you're looking at the newer buildings in Discovery Park District on the west side.

Purdue Apartments With Their Own CityBus Express Route

This is the part most students don't know about. CityBus runs three express routes that start at specific apartment complexes and go straight to campus, weekdays only while Purdue is in session. All three stop at the Physics Building and Purdue Memorial Union.

53E Lindberg Express: Village West, The Cottages on Lindberg, Station 21

The 53E is the best car-free setup off campus. According to the August 2026 schedule, it leaves from the Village West clubhouse, The Cottages on Lindberg and the Station 21 clubhouse, and it runs every 12 minutes from 7 to 10 a.m. Service continues at longer gaps until about 8 p.m.

It also happens to serve the cheapest rooms near Purdue. Village West lists rooms from $499 at 1.8 miles out, The Cottages on Lindberg from $499, and Station 21 on McCormick Road from $535. All three carry FMP scores of 4.2 or higher.

52E Cumberland Express: Redpoint, The Lodge, The Ivy

The 52E covers Cumberland Avenue. Its August 2026 schedule lists Redpoint, The Lodge and The Ivy as timepoints, running 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on a 40-minute cycle. The Lodge on the Trail at 2101 Cumberland Ave is 2.5 miles from campus, lists rooms from $625 and has a 4.8 FMP score. Forty minutes between buses is a long time to stand on Cumberland in February, though.

51E Lark and Alight Express: Lark Apartments, Lark Townhomes, Alight

The 51E serves the Lark and Alight communities on the far west side. CityBus's route page has it running about every 20 minutes from roughly 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Lark West Lafayette Townhomes on Puget Drive is 3.3 miles out and lists from $529. That's the farthest commute on this list, so the bus isn't optional here.

The resident ID rule on express buses

CityBus says unlimited ride passes are not valid on express routes marked "E." You ride free with an authorized resident ID or pay the express fare. Ask the leasing office, in writing, whether your building's residents are authorized before you count on it.

Regular CityBus Routes That Reach Purdue Apartments

Outside the express routes, plan on a paid CityBus pass. For 2026-27, Purdue says members of its community who buy a CityBus pass are responsible for the entire cost, and the semester pass rose from $99 to $155 on January 1, 2026, the Purdue Exponent reported.

The useful one is Route 21 McCormick Road. Its August 2026 schedule runs every 30 minutes from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., including Saturdays, with stops at Village West, Purdue Memorial Union and Krannert. So the Lindberg Road complexes get weekday express service plus a six-day backup. That combination is rare.

Which Purdue Neighborhood Is Easiest Without a Car?

New Chauncey, if you can find a room. You walk to class, you skip the bus pass and you pay $599 to $799 rather than tower prices. If New Chauncey is full, the Lindberg Road complexes on the 53E are the next best option, and they're cheaper. Frequently Asked Questions About Living at Purdue Without a Car

Can you live off campus at Purdue without a car?

Yes. Plenty of students do it from Chauncey Village and New Chauncey on foot. Farther out, pick a complex on an express route like the 53E Lindberg Express or a free Purdue Campus Transit loop.

Do Purdue students ride CityBus for free in 2026?

No. Purdue Campus Transit is free, but Purdue says CityBus pass buyers pay the full cost for 2026-27. Express routes are the exception for residents of the complexes they serve, who ride with an authorized resident ID.

Which Purdue apartments are on a bus line?

Village West, The Cottages on Lindberg and Station 21 are on the 53E. Redpoint, The Lodge and The Ivy are on the 52E, and Lark and Alight are on the 51E. Village West is also on Route 21 McCormick Road.

What about weekends?

Plan ahead. Purdue Campus Transit and the express routes run weekdays only, so Saturday trips mean Route 21, another regular CityBus route, a bike or a friend with a car.

Is biking a real option in West Lafayette?

For most of the year, yes. From the Lindberg Road complexes it's about two miles to campus. Winter is the hard part, which is exactly when that 12-minute express bus earns its keep.
