The University of Texas at Austin drops roughly 50,000 Longhorns into one of the country's most magnetic cities, on a campus known as the Forty Acres and crowned by the 307-foot Tower that glows burnt orange after wins. Campus runs right up against Guadalupe Street, the strip students call the Drag, and just south the city opens onto Lady Bird Lake with its hike-and-bike trail and the green sprawl of Zilker Park. Austin itself is the draw: live music in every district and a downtown a short ride away. Fall Saturdays at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium pull the whole city into burnt orange. With the campus shuttle, CapMetro buses, and a dense, walkable West Campus next door, plenty of students never need to drive to class.
UT Austin doesn't require freshmen to live on campus, which is unusual for a school this size, but on-campus dorms are popular and competitive and many first-years choose them anyway. There is no live-on mandate.
Because there is no requirement, students at UT Austin hit the off-campus market early, and over 80 percent of the student body lives off campus. The center of gravity is West Campus, a dense by-the-bed apartment district right next to school where most underclassmen who go off-campus end up. Riverside, across the river to the south, runs cheaper but means commuting.
Leases in West Campus are typically per-person rather than per-unit, so each roommate signs for their own bed and you are not on the hook if someone bails. West Campus turns over fast, many leases require a guarantor, and parking is scarce and expensive. Expect higher prices the later you wait.
The dense, by-the-bed high-rise district right next to school, West Campus is walkable to class and the social center for underclassmen.
Just north of school, North Campus is a bit quieter and popular with upperclassmen and grad students.
