Purdue off-campus housing cost depends almost entirely on where you sign. Distance sets the price here, almost block by block. Fine, everyone knows that. What caught me off guard was the size of the gap: close to $1,000 a month between the bottom and the top of the per-room market. Every figure in this section is pulled from live listings of off-campus housing near Purdue on Find My Place.

Lindberg Road and the far west side: $499 to $599 a room

Cheapest rooms in town, longest ride to class. Village West on Willowbrook Drive lists rooms in a four-bedroom from $499 and holds a 5.0 FMP score. The Cottages on Lindberg at 2191 Mida Dr starts at $499 for a room in a five-bedroom, 2.0 miles from campus. Station 21 on McCormick Road lists from $535. Farther out still, Lark West Lafayette lists from $529, but it's 3.5 miles away and residents report steep move-out charges.

New Chauncey and South Chauncey: $599 to $799 a room

These blocks are the sweet spot if you want to walk. Collegiate Communities manages houses in New Chauncey, about 0.3 miles from campus, with rooms listed from $599. Down toward the river, 271 S River Rd and 420 S Chauncey Ave both list two-bedroom plans from $675. Salisbury Street options like 231 Flats and Victory on Salisbury start at $799.

Chauncey Village towers: $1,125 to $1,459 and up

You pay for the elevator and the gym. VERVE West Lafayette at 150 S Chauncey Ave, 0.6 miles from campus, lists four-bedroom plans from $1,439. EVER West Lafayette starts at $1,459, Provenance on Mitch Daniels Boulevard at $1,199, and Hub on Campus on State Street at $1,125.

What a One-Bedroom Near Purdue Costs

Living alone runs about $1,488 a month at the median. That figure comes from 57 one-bedroom floor plans listed in West Lafayette on FMP, and the middle half of them fall between $1,267 and $1,902.

Odyssey Apartments on Neil Armstrong Drive is the outlier at $708, though it's 2.1 miles out and has zero reviews so far. At the other end, EVER lists a one-bedroom at $2,449 (yes, nearly $1,000 more than a bed in its own four-bedroom). Living alone near campus runs about double a shared room. Worth it for some grad students. For a sophomore? Rarely.

Per-Bed vs Whole-Unit Prices on Purdue Listings

Check how a building prices before you compare it to the one next door. Many West Lafayette listings say "Whole Unit," yet the rent falls as the bedroom count rises, which only makes sense if you're paying by the bedroom. Village West is the clean example: $805 for a two-bedroom plan, $585 for a three, $499 for a four.

When the curve goes the other way (rent climbing with each added bedroom, as at WestRidge Flats and University Crossing), you're looking at a price for the whole apartment. Split it by roommates before you compare. And a few buildings, Hub on Campus among them, have prices that bounce around by plan, so call the leasing office and ask for the exact number in writing.

Purdue Off-Campus Housing Cost Beyond Rent

Rent on the listing is a starting point, not your bill. Most West Lafayette property pages on FMP carry a note that prices are base rent and monthly fees haven't been posted yet. Ask about trash, internet, parking and any "amenity" or "technology" fee before you sign.

Transportation is the other line item. Purdue Campus Transit is free for students and runs three loops (Ross-Ade, Purdue Mall and Discovery Park) Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., per Purdue's Campus Transit page. Off those loops, you're on CityBus, and the free student ride ended. CityBus raised its semester pass from $99 to $155 on January 1, 2026, according to the Purdue Exponent.

Here's the math that matters. A $499 room on Lindberg Road plus two $155 semester passes still comes in roughly $11,000 a year below a $1,439 tower bed. Even with the bus, the far west side wins on price. You give up time, not money.

How to Lower Your Purdue Off-Campus Housing Cost

Sign early and sign in a group. Rooms in four- and five-bedroom units are the cheapest per person almost everywhere in West Lafayette, and those units go to groups that already have a roommate list ready. Our timeline on when Purdue students should start looking covers the leasing calendar.

Then compare by total monthly cost, not sticker rent. Sort the Purdue listings by price, then read each building's reviews. A $50 savings doesn't help much at a building rated 1.9.

Frequently Asked Questions About Purdue Off-Campus Housing Cost

What is the cheapest off-campus housing near Purdue?

Right now it's a tie at $499 a room, between Village West on Willowbrook Drive and The Cottages on Lindberg on Mida Drive. Both sit about two miles from campus. Before you sign, see if a free Purdue Campus Transit loop stops nearby; if not, add a bike, a car or a $155 CityBus semester pass to the budget.

How much is rent near Purdue for a shared apartment?

$599 to $799 a room gets you within walking distance in New Chauncey, South Chauncey or along Salisbury Street. Move into the newer Chauncey Village towers and you're starting closer to $1,125, sometimes $1,459.

Is a one-bedroom near Purdue worth it?

Usually not. You'd be paying a $1,488 median for a one-bedroom against $599 to $799 for a walkable room in a shared house. Grad students and anyone with a strict study schedule are the exceptions.

Do Purdue students still ride CityBus free?

No. Purdue Campus Transit is still free on campus, but riding CityBus off campus means buying your own pass, and the semester pass rose to $155 in January 2026.

Are utilities included in West Lafayette rent?

Sometimes, but don't assume it. Most FMP listings in West Lafayette show base rent only, so ask each property for an all-in monthly total before you compare.

He writes here about where the student housing market is headed and why FMP is built the way it is.
