I am the father of the couple that lost their home to a fire in their apartment at The Point Apartments, on east Flamingo near Maryland parkway. The apartment manager, for The Point apartments took advantage of our children using the fire as an opportunity to avoid honoring their lease contract, by telling them she had a sister property where they could rehome them. The conversation became almost predatory at this point. Our children were advised, this property’s most comparable space was at Ascend townhomes, at a much higher premium. They toured the unit and were told afterward the base rent of this unit was two hundred more than their current rent, and the management is choosing not to honor the agreed upon lease amount from The Point Apartments, that our children were in for another six months. After that point they also used a bait and switch tactic and our children were then told, I’m sorry the rent is almost 400 over their current rental payment on that particular unit. They are proposing to increase the rent by one and a half times what their current lease is written for. This after they made it apparent that they had no other options but that unit, at that property.
In addition to that situation, the renters insurance they provided was liability only and that was never explained to them when they agreed to purchase that policy through the apartment complex, to be included with their rent. This is also considered predatory from a sales perspective; giving the illusion that they are protected but NOT advising verbally to seek out protections for their personal belongings as it is a liability only policy . The ONLY thing that is protected is the landlord’s property and interests.
So, in summary not only did our children lose all of their and their children’s belongings, they lost their home and a pet, with no remorse or compassion from the management company, for their tenants’ disposition.
All that was said to them was that’s all they can offer and if they’d like, they can look at a different sister property which is in a much worse area, and a different school zone, for a comparable rent to space offered ratio. There is no compassion or consideration for our children and the fact that their lives have been completely turned upside down; there is only conditional assistance from the property management company for good tenants that have been there for over three years and never missed a rent payment; it seems that doing the right thing isn’t always rewarded as it should be.
