Illinois State off campus housing without a car works best in three places: the blocks around Uptown Station, the Beaufort Street and Hovey Avenue strip south of the Quad, and Vernon Avenue, where the ISU Campus East route stops every 20 minutes on weekdays. Illinois State off campus housing without a car works best in three places: the blocks around Uptown Station, the Beaufort Street and Hovey Avenue strip south of the Quad, and Vernon Avenue, where the ISU Campus East route now stops every 20 minutes on weekdays. Any active Illinois State ID rides every Connect Transit bus free. So the question isn't cost. It's how far your door is from a stop, and how often the bus actually comes.

We checked buildings on FMP's Illinois State off campus housing page against Connect Transit's fall 2026 route maps (August 16 to December 12). Walk times are our estimates from each street address to the nearest stop on those maps, so treat them as approximate.

Key Takeaways

  • Your Redbird Card is the bus pass. "Any active ISU ID gets you anywhere we go," says Connect Transit's rider guide.
  • Green runs every 15 minutes, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, and gets you from Uptown Station to downtown Bloomington in 11.
  • Cheapest bus-friendly bed we found? 102 W. Locust, at $360 per person in a four-bedroom, a minute or two from a Yellow Route stop.
  • Brown and Tan come once an hour and wrap up around 8:30 p.m. on weekdays (fine for class, rough for a night lab).
  • Vernon Avenue gets a bus every 20 minutes on weekdays via ISU Campus East.
  • Skip North Linden if you have no car: Ironwood Gardens sits roughly half a mile from the nearest stop.

How Illinois State Students Ride Connect Transit Free

You show your Redbird Card and ride. No fare, no pass to buy. Illinois State pays Connect Transit directly under a two-year agreement that the Board of Trustees approved for July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2027, capped at $1.5 million, per the trustees' resolution.

Friends visiting without an ISU ID pay $1.25 a ride, with fares capped at $3 a day and $40 a month on Connect Transit's new contactless system.

The Connect Transit routes Illinois State students actually use

  • Redbird Express: a 15-stop, 20-minute campus loop between Tri-Towers, Watterson Towers and Cardinal Court. From 7 a.m. daily until midnight Monday to Thursday, 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and 7 p.m. Sunday, in session only.
  • Green: Uptown Station to downtown Bloomington via Main Street. Every 15 minutes on weekdays until 10 p.m., then every 30. Weekends run every 30.
  • Yellow goes Uptown to Heartland Community College along Fell, Willow, Main and Raab, every 30 minutes, and runs until 2:45 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
  • ISU Campus East: Watterson Towers down Kingsley and Beaufort to Vernon Avenue and the College of Engineering building on GE Road. Every 20 minutes on weekdays, 7:45 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Brown and Tan, both hourly. Pink runs every 30 minutes but stops around 8:15 p.m.

Uptown Normal Apartments Near Uptown Station

Uptown is the easiest car-free base near Illinois State. Green, Yellow, Pink, Red, Lime, Brown and Tan all start at Uptown Station, according to their fall 2026 maps. Amtrak and Peoria Charter board there too, per ISU's Parking and Transportation office.

  • CollegePlace Uptown, 100 S Fell Ave: about a minute from the Fell and North stop on Pink, and three or four minutes from Uptown Station. Lists from $845 for a two-bedroom. That's the only floor plan shown, so ask whether it's per person or for the unit.
  • 306 N Fell Ave: roughly a minute to the Yellow stop at Fell and Locust. $540 per person in a two-bedroom, or $1,030 alone.
  • 102 W. Locust: one to two minutes to that same Yellow stop. $360 per person with four; the two-person rate is $550, which is how we know these are per-person prices.
  • 410 Normal Avenue: about two minutes to Willow and School on Yellow and University and Willow on the Redbird Express. A four-bedroom lists at $750 a bed, and the one-bedroom is $1,290.

South of Campus: Beaufort Street, Hovey Avenue and the Brown Route

The big complexes south of campus sit a few minutes from Beaufort and University, a stop on the Green, Brown and Redbird Express maps. Three routes, one corner.

  • The Social on Hovey, 800 W Hovey Ave: one to two minutes to Hovey and Kingsley on Brown, and two to three to Beaufort and University. Four-bedroom beds from $739. Two-bedrooms are $979, so that's per bed.
  • The Flats at ISU, 709 S Main St: two to three minutes to Beaufort and University. $699 a bed in a four-bedroom. The one-bedroom is $1,599, so that's per bed.
  • 505 S Fell Ave: about two minutes to Beaufort and School, a Green and Redbird Express stop. $405 per person for four.
  • 1016 W Hovey Ave: one to two minutes to Hovey and Adelaide, but that's Brown only. $365 per person if six of you split it. Treat this as a walk-or-bike address and the bus as backup.

Vernon Avenue Apartments on the ISU Campus East Route

Vernon Avenue is a solid car-free pick for weekday commuters. ISU Campus East stops at Vernon and Hester, Vernon and Linden and Vernon Stables on its way to the College of Engineering, every 20 minutes on weekdays. On the way back it follows Vernon, turns onto Main Street and loops back to Watterson Towers.

  • 320 E Vernon Ave: about a minute from Vernon Stables, served by Campus East and the hourly Tan. $415 per person in a four-bedroom.
  • 21 Flora Way: one to two minutes from the same stop. $395 per person for four, $665 for two.
  • 409 W Vernon Ave: around a minute from Vernon and Hester, on Brown and Campus East. One-person floor plans list from $834.

The catch: Campus East quits at 8:30 p.m. on weekdays and starts at 1 p.m. on weekends.

North Normal and Bloomington: Where Car-Free Gets Harder

North Normal runs on Yellow, which comes every 30 minutes. 727 West on Raab Road is two or three minutes from the Raab and Sugar Creek stop and lists from $625 for a four-bedroom (one floor plan, so confirm the basis). The Social Normal on Traders Circle is a two-to-six-minute walk to that same stop, with four-bedroom beds from $659.

Then there's Ironwood Gardens Apartments at 2000 N Linden St. Studios list from $982, a whole-unit price. The closest stop we found is School and McKnight on Pink, roughly half a mile away, and Pink's last weekday trips leave Uptown at 8:15 p.m. Honestly? Bring a car or a good bike.

Bloomington houses on the Green Route

Bloomington's North East Street works better than its distance from campus suggests, because Green runs right up Main Street every 15 minutes. The Flats on East, 902 N East St, is two or three minutes from Main and Chestnut. It lists a four-bedroom at $2,080, and since the three-bedroom is $1,605, that's the whole unit, about $520 each. 916 N East St lists a five-bedroom at $2,275 and sits a couple of minutes from Main and Empire. It shows one floor plan; if that's the whole house, it splits to about $455 a person.

The FMP Last-Bus Check

The FMP Last-Bus Check is simple: before you sign, find the last bus from your nearest stop and compare it with the latest thing on your weekly schedule. A night class, a closing shift, rehearsal. If the bus quits first, you're walking home.

Here's where it bites. Pink's last weekday trips leave Uptown at 8:15 p.m. Brown's go at 8:35 p.m. Green runs until 9:45 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, but until 2 a.m. on Friday. Sunday is short across the board, with Green ending at 6:45 p.m. and the Redbird Express at 7.
