About Off-Campus Housing Near Illinois State University
Illinois State University fills its Normal campus with about 20,720 Redbirds, and as the state's oldest public university it's woven into the twin towns of Normal and Bloomington. Campus opens onto Uptown Normal, a compact, walkable district of shops, eateries, and a public traffic circle that's the town's front porch. Game days at Hancock Stadium start along Redbird Row, where fans ring the Victory Bell after every score. School pride shows in the Wear Red on Friday tradition and a homecoming parade dating to 1921, and ISU runs Gamma Phi Circus, the oldest collegiate circus in the country. Illinois State requires students who have been out of high school less than two years to live in University Housing for the fall and spring. As a result, most students stay on campus through their first two years before moving off.
Off-Campus Eligibility
Exceptions exist but are granted case by case, so do not assume you will get one. Lease Timing
Leases near campus usually run a full 12 months even though you are really there nine, so plan for summer rent or a sublet. Some older divided homes near campus have occupancy limits set by Normal's rental rules, so confirm the legal headcount before you pack friends into a small unit. Leases here typically start in August to line up with fall classes.
