Oregon State Off-Campus Housing Without a Car

Yes, you can live off campus at Oregon State without a car. Corvallis Transit System buses have been fare-free since February 2011, and most routes run along the OSU campus. Pick a place near a stop on Route 2, 3, 5 or 6, which run every 30 to 40 minutes on weekdays.

Yes, you can live off campus at Oregon State without a car, and plenty of Beavers do. Corvallis Transit System buses have been fare-free since February 2011, you don't even show an ID, and most routes run through or right along the OSU campus. The catch is timing. Pick a place within a short walk of a stop on Route 2, 3, 5 or 6, which run every 30 to 40 minutes on weekdays, and you'll rarely miss having a car.

Still deciding on a building? Start with the full list of off-campus housing near Oregon State, then use this guide to check how each address actually connects to class.

Key Takeaways

  • Free. Corvallis Transit System (CTS) charges no fare and asks for no ID, thanks to a Transit Operations Fee on city utility bills.
  • Routes 2, 3, 5 and 6 are the workhorses: every 30 minutes on weekday mornings and evenings, every 40 minutes midday, with the last trips leaving downtown at 8:45 p.m.
  • Sundays are thin: Routes 1 through 6 only, roughly 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Routes 7 and 8 skip Sunday entirely.
  • OSU's own Beaver Bus loops campus every 14 to 15 minutes, weekdays 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. It moves you around campus, not to your apartment.
  • Of the 86 Corvallis-area properties tied to OSU on Find My Place, 16 sit within about six-tenths of a mile of the Memorial Union, and 82 are within a quarter mile of a CTS stop.

How Fare-Free Corvallis Transit Works for OSU Students

CTS is free for everyone, every ride. The city went fareless in February 2011 and pays for it with a Transit Operations Fee collected from every Corvallis utility customer, OSU Housing included, per the City of Corvallis CTS funding page. Ridership jumped 37.9% in the first fareless year. If your lease puts utilities in your name, you're already chipping in.

Every route starts and ends at the Downtown Transit Center at SW 5th Street and Monroe Avenue. From there, most lines run west along Monroe Ave, Jefferson Ave or Western Blvd, which happen to frame the campus. Hop off at NW Monroe and 26th or SW 26th and Campus Way and you're there.

The CTS weekday schedule, in plain numbers

These come from the city's live transit data feed, dated September 21, 2026. Schedules change, so check before you sign.

  • Routes 2, 3, 5 and 6: departures every 30 minutes from 6:15 to 10:45 a.m., every 40 minutes from 11:20 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., then every 30 minutes again until 8:45 p.m.
  • Hourly service on Routes 1, 7 and 8 (6 a.m. to about 8 p.m.). Route 1 Peak adds nine extra weekday runs to Witham Hill, so that corridor does better than "hourly" sounds.
  • Saturday service starts around 7:15 to 8 a.m. and wraps up between 6 and 8 p.m., depending on the route.

Where the schedule gets thin

Sundays and late nights. On Sunday only Routes 1 through 6 run, with eight trips each between about 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Routes 7 and 8 take Sundays off. There is no CTS service on Thanksgiving (November 26, 2026) or Christmas, and the city's bus routes and schedules page lists six holidays with no buses at all. Plan your Sunday grocery run like it's a train you can't miss.

Beaver Bus vs. Corvallis Transit: Which One Gets You to Class?

CTS gets you from your apartment to campus. The Beaver Bus gets you across campus. OSU Transportation Services runs three routes, according to its Beaver Bus schedules page:

  • Central Route, every 15 minutes
  • Northeast Route, every 14 minutes
  • LBCC Corvallis Route, every 20 minutes (fall through spring terms only)

All three run Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Track them live in the Flexigo app (sign in with "BEAV"). Each bus has a rack for two bikes.

Honestly? It's a campus connector, great for a cross-campus hop between classes, not your daily ride home.

Where to Live in Corvallis Without a Car, by Bus Corridor

Live where the buses already go. Every price below is base rent for the whole unit, before fees. (Full disclosure: our listing data shows only base rent, and most Corvallis properties haven't posted their fees yet.)

Walk zone: Monroe Ave, Kings Blvd and SW A St

If you can walk, you don't need a bus. Sixteen properties on FMP sit within roughly 0.6 miles of the Memorial Union, straight-line. The Vicinity on SW A St is 0.3 miles from OSU, with one-bedrooms from $1,495. 426 NW 15th St lists a one-bedroom at $1,195, and 3007 NW Harrison Blvd lists one at $1,200.

Witham Hill and NW Walnut Blvd: Route 1 country

Witham Hill is the classic "too far to walk, fine by bus" zone. Witham Village (2.3 miles out) starts at $1,425 for a one-bedroom. Witham Hill Oaks (1.7 miles) starts at $1,502. Route 1 is hourly, but those nine Route 1 Peak runs fill in the morning and afternoon rush, which is exactly when you're commuting.

Kings Blvd corridor: Route 5

Route 5 runs the Kings Blvd spine on the 30- and 40-minute pattern. 1335 North is a mile from OSU, with one-bedrooms at $1,395 and two-bedrooms at $1,695.

South Corvallis: Route 6

South Corvallis has some of the lowest one-bedroom rents on FMP's OSU list. Route 6 links it to Western Blvd and SW 15th and Jefferson on the frequent schedule. Crystal Lake Apartments (1.4 miles) lists one-bedrooms at $1,325. Rivergreen Landing (2.5 miles) lists $1,169 for a one-bedroom and $1,599 for a three-bedroom. Split three ways, that three-bed is about $533 each before utilities.

SW 35th, 49th and Grand Oaks: Routes 3 and 8

The southwest side works best if you're near Route 3, which has the frequent schedule and stops at SW 26th and Campus Way. Creekside & Spring Creek on SW 49th St (1.9 miles) has two-bedrooms from $1,805. Grand Oaks, 2.5 miles out, is on Route 8 only: hourly on weekdays, nothing on Sunday. That's livable. It's just not spontaneous.

Living in Philomath without a car

Philomath works if you're disciplined. The fareless Philomath Connection runs weekdays to the OSU campus, with limited Saturday service. 1215 Pioneer St lists a one-bedroom at $1,145, 4.8 miles from campus. No Sunday service, though.

The FMP Missed-Bus Test for Picking an Apartment

The FMP Missed-Bus Test asks one question: if you miss your bus by a minute, how long until the next one? Thirty minutes or less is car-free friendly. An hour means leaving 70 minutes early for an 8 a.m. midterm, or buying a bike.

On weekdays, Routes 2, 3, 5 and 6 pass the test. Routes 1, 7 and 8 don't, except where Route 1 Peak overlaps.

Run it on Sunday too. A place that passes Monday and fails Sunday is fine if you don't work weekends. If you do, it isn't.

Then do the money math. A 2026-27 annual commuter permit runs $826 for Zone A, $575 for Zone B and $167 for Zone C, per OSU's parking rates. Add insurance and gas, and a $100-a-month rent premium for a spot on Route 3 often beats keeping a car.

Frequently Asked Questions About Oregon State Off-Campus Housing Without a Car

Is the Corvallis bus really free for OSU students?

Free for everyone, students or not. CTS has been fareless since February 2011, and you don't need to show an OSU ID. The Linn-Benton Loop to LBCC and the Albany train station is also free with an OSU ID.

Do I need a car to live off campus at Oregon State?

Probably not. If you live in the walk zone or near a stop on Routes 2, 3, 5 or 6, the bus plus a bike covers almost everything (register the bike free with Project 529, which OSU recommends). A car starts to matter if you live on an hourly route and work Sundays.

What time does the last Corvallis bus leave?

8:45 p.m. on weekdays from the Downtown Transit Center, on Routes 2, 3, 5 and 6. After that, OSU SafeRide, a student-fee-funded ride service, runs nightly from 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. during the academic year.

Which Corvallis neighborhoods are easiest without a car?

Anywhere you can walk: the blocks off Monroe Ave, Kings Blvd and SW A St. Past that, South Corvallis (Route 6) and Kings Blvd (Route 5) get the most frequent buses once you're past walking distance.

He started it after getting burned by the usual student housing routine: hidden fees, staged photos, and a leasing office that stopped answering the second the lease was signed. So he built the platform he wished he'd had. Today he sets the strategy and keeps the whole company pointed at one job, making off-campus housing something students can actually trust. He writes here about where the student housing market is headed and why FMP is built the way it is.
